For divorced Singaporean parents with over $1 million

You left your marriage.
Your will may still leave everything to your ex.

You rebuilt your life.

You rebuilt your money.

In Singapore, a divorce does not rewrite your will.

It does not cancel your CPF nomination either.

Those papers still say what they said before.

$0

of your CPF savings are controlled by your will.
CPF is paid out by nomination only.
Getting married cancels that nomination. Getting divorced does not.

The three loose ends

A will is one document.
Your estate is decided by three.

Most divorced parents fix the first one and never touch the other two.

A will, a CPF nomination form and insurance policy papers on a table
Loose end 01

The ex who never left your will

In Singapore, getting married cancels your old will.

Getting divorced does not.

If your will still names your former spouse, it can still stand.

Loose end 02

The nomination nobody updated

CPF and insurance money does not follow your will.

It follows the nomination form.

Many of those forms are still signed in an ex-spouse's name.

Loose end 03

The guardian who holds the money

A child under 21 cannot hold an inheritance alone.

An adult holds it for them.

After a divorce, that adult is often your former spouse.

The method

The No Loose Ends Method

A simple way to make sure what you leave lands where you want it.
Nowhere else.

1

Trace

We follow every dollar you own.

We show where it lands today.

Not where you assume it lands.

2

Seal

We close each loose end.

Will, CPF nomination, policy nomination.

So nothing you leave can travel back to your former spouse.

3

Split

We divide by what each child needs.

Where one child gets the home, the other is matched with cash.

This is called estate equalisation.

A woman reviewing documents with a specialist
Fair is not the same as equal

Splitting it down the middle
is where most of the trouble starts.

Two families. The same money. A very different outcome.

Family A. Split equally

Two children. Half each, on paper.

One gets the flat. One gets the cash.

The flat cannot be sold for years.

One child waits. The other does not.

They stop speaking.

Family B. Split fairly

Same two children. Same estate.

The home goes to the one who lives in it.

The other is matched with cash from a policy.

That is estate equalisation.

Both are covered from day one.

Illustration only. Every family is different.

Singapore housing blocks at dusk
The risk nobody plans for

You know what a divorce
can do to a family's money.
Your children's marriages carry the same risk.

You seal every loose end. You leave it cleanly to your child.
Ten years later their marriage ends.
Part of what you left can end up on the table.

What you leave stays theirs

In Singapore, an inheritance is generally not treated as a marital asset.

If your child keeps it separate, it usually stays out of any division.

Where it goes wrong

Three ways it gets pulled in

The money buys the couple's home.

The other spouse pays into it or improves it.

It gets mixed into a joint account.

Any one of those can turn your gift into shared property.

General information only. Not legal advice. Every case turns on its own facts.

Four ways to close it

  1. 1

Keep it out of the matrimonial home

The fastest way an inheritance becomes shared is when it buys or upgrades the home the couple lives in.

There are other ways to help a child with housing.

  2. 2

    Keep it unmixed

Inherited money sits in an account in your child's sole name.

Never a joint account. Never topped up by a spouse.

Once it is mixed, it is very hard to untangle later.

  3. 3

Let them benefit without owning it outright

A trust can let a child use what you left while the asset itself stays in the bloodline.

What they do not own outright is harder to divide.

  4. 4

    Stagger when it lands

    You choose the ages.

Some at 25, more at 35, the rest later.

Money that has not been received yet cannot be split yet.

Which of the four fits your family depends on what you own and who your children married.
That is what the review works out.

3

documents decide your estate.

Your will is only one of them.

21

the age a child in Singapore can hold an inheritance on their own.

Before that, an adult holds it for them.

6 to 12

months probate can take.

Until it clears, a will does nothing at all.

General information only. Not legal advice.

The agenda

Exactly what we cover
in the hour

No mystery. This is the whole agenda, in order.

  1. 1

Your will, read line by line

Was it written before or after the divorce.

Does it still name your former spouse anywhere.

Who did you appoint as executor, and are they still the right person.

  2. 2

    Your CPF nomination

Whose name is on the form today.

What your Ordinary, Special and Medisave balances would pay out.

The exact form that changes it, and how long it takes.

  3. 3

    Every policy you hold

The nomination on each one, one by one.

Which are revocable and which are not.

Why your will cannot override any of them.

  4. 4

    Your property

How the title is held today.

Whether it passes outside your will completely.

What happens if a child inherits a home they cannot afford to keep.

  5. 5

    Your children

If they are under 21, who controls their money today.

How to name someone else to hold it.

What age they actually receive it, and whether you can stagger it.

  6. 6

    Your children's marriages

Which of your children are married, and what that means for what you leave them.

How an inheritance gets pulled into a divorce, and the four ways to stop it.

Whether a trust is worth it for your family, or overkill.

  7. 7

    The split

Who gets the home. Who gets matched with cash.

How estate equalisation works on your real numbers.

How to word it so nobody reads it as favouritism.

  8. 8

    Your action list

    Everything above, on one page.

What to change, in what order, and what each step involves.

Yours to keep at the end of the hour.

What you need to bring.

Nothing.
If your will and nomination forms are easy to find, bring them.
If not, we work from what you remember.

My divorce was in 2016.

I updated my will that same year and thought I was done.

Nobody told me the CPF nomination was a separate form.

His name was still sitting on it. Nine years later.

It took one form to fix.

My son is 13. I kept telling myself I had time.

Then she explained that if I go first, my ex is the one holding my son's money until he turns 21.

Not just the school fees I set aside. All of it.

I booked the follow up before I left the room.

I wanted all three to get the same amount.

It felt like the fair thing to do.

She showed me my eldest would be stuck with a flat she cannot sell while the other two walked away with cash.

We rebuilt the whole plan in one afternoon.

All three have seen it. All three agree with it.

I went in fully expecting to be sold an insurance policy.

A full hour, and nobody asked me to buy anything.

I left with a one page list of what to change.

I did two of them myself that same week.

That is when I called her back.

I remarried in 2021.

Nobody warned me that getting married cancels your old will.

The one I wrote to protect my daughter.

For three years she was not covered by anything.

I did not sleep the night I found out.

I bought the flat with my sister after the divorce, not my ex.

I assumed that made it safe.

She showed me it passes outside my will completely.

My daughter would have got nothing from it.

My ex has custody. That was the part I could not get past.

She showed me what I can still control, and what I cannot.

I stopped feeling powerless about it.

There was more I could do than I thought.
